114 2nd Street has a rich history. The current building was built in 1921. There was a wood frame building at this location prior to this for years but it has burned to the ground in December of 1920. Referred to The Vessels Department Store, Vessels General Store or just the Vessels Store, it sold everything from paint and hardware to clothing and fabric. The Vessels family owned the building and operated a store there before the fire and continued on until at least the mid 1970’s. The fire is actually believed to have started in the Vessels Store. The flames spread in both directions destroying the buildings on either side (including the old Masonic Lodge). Several other buildings, including a home across the street was also casualties to the blaze. If you look at the building from the front you can see 3 brick buildings in a row which identify the path of destruction. Since rebuilding in 1921 the building has been lovingly cared for and has much of the original interior. Even the door handle on the front door is original. It is a beautiful building that transports you back in time.
